All About Penguins Lesson Plan

Lesson Plan: All About Penguins
Subject:
Fountas and Pinnell Reading Series
Topic:
Author’s Purpose
Objectives:
·         Given vocabulary, the students will participate and practice new vocabulary words in the story by giving an example of each word in a sentence of their own.
·         Given a text, the students will complete a picture walk and make oral predictions about what may happen in the text or what the text is mainly about.
·         Given the text, the students will complete a read aloud of the text in small groups.
·         Given text(s), the students will know and be able to identify the author’s purpose.
·         Given a text, the students will know and be able to read it while participating in a running record assessment.

·         Fountas and Pinnell – All About Penguins – non-fiction text – Book 7 – Level C
·         Snow making kit
·         March of the Penguins DVD
·         Vocabulary handout

·         Internet
·         Fountas and Pinnell Word Bags and Journals
·         Pens and Pencils

Motivation:
Teacher will say, “Let’s make snow! After we make snow, we will learn how penguins live and move around in snow. Then we will discover what the author’s purpose of writing, All About Penguins was. At the end of the lesson, we will watch penguin’s in action!”
Activities:
After the students make their own snow, they will…
·         The teacher will introduce the book; All About Penguins after the students have made predictions from the a picture that they complete.
·         The students will practice the vocabulary in the text.
·         The students will complete a read aloud of the text.
·         The students will identify the author’s purpose
·         The students will complete related activities.
·         The students will complete a running record of All About Penguins.
Practice Activity:
The teacher will present each student with three texts, each an aspect of author’s purpose that we are studying. The students will identify the types of author’s purpose with the guidance of the teacher and list at least 2 reasons why they chose that answer. The students will be able to identify the type of author’s purpose in the text, All About Penguins. The students will list examples of their reasoning.
Independent Activity:
Students will read 6 total texts or samplings from texts and decide what the author’s purpose is. The students will list at least 2 reasons why they chose their answers.
Evaluation:
·         Participation
·         Completed extension exercises
·         Completed author’s purpose responses

Closure:
The teacher will ask the students what the purpose of this lesson was. After the responses, the teacher will summarize the point(s) of the lesson and explain to the students why knowing what the author’s purpose in a text is important.
Assessment:
Assessments are on-going. The students will work with author’s purpose on their DRA’s, CMT’s, in grade 5 exercises, and throughout the rest of this school year.
